Royal United 1 - 3 U14A
Report by Bryan Bletso

Horsham & District Plate R2

The U14A's second half display was enough to ease Badgers into the quarter finals of the Plate, in a game switched to Brockham after the heavy rain earlier in the week had led to waterlogging of the Royal United pitch.

Royal may have been from a lower league than Badgers, but they put up a determined first half display which saw them go in 1-0 up at half time.  During the first half Brockham were often second to the ball andRoyal took the lead on fifteen minutes with a shot from the edge of the area which gave Brockham keeper Connor Mitchell little chance.

Brockham knew they had to step up in the second period. Once more Ben Stokoe prompted the side with some intelligent midfield play, and almost immediately Badgers were on level terms when Scoop Lad of the Match Henry Hill put pressure on the Royal keeper and then squeeze the ball home from a tight angle.

It was the spur Brockham needed, and Badgers controlled the second half almost completely.  It was no surprise when Ollie Curtis took a pass from Stephen Kehl and confidently shot past the oncoming keeper to make it 2-1 with fifteen minutes to go.

It was all Brockham now, with Liam Doyle putting in a strong second half performance.  While Royal never gave up, Joe Parker and Jack Hunt in defence mopped up all that United could throw at them, and it was no surprise when Brockham made the game safe five minutes from time. Kehl lobbed the keeper following a great through ball from Ollie Smith.

Scoop Lad of the Match: Henry Hill

Squad: Connor Mitchell,  Joe Parker, Henry Smith, Tom Bletso (c), Jack Hunt, Ollie Smith, Ben Stokoe, Tim Hopkins, Henry Hill, Stephen Kehl, Ollie Curtis, Liam Doyle

U13A 4 - 1 Epsom Eagles
Report by Simon Winter

Surrey Youth League

Visitors Epsom Eagles started in determined mood against Brockham Badgers U13A and had the best of the early exchanges, with Badgers’ first effort on goal taking eight minutes to arrive.

Slowly gaining parity of possession, Brockham took the lead five minutes later. A flowing team move involving Oli Winter and Ross Bangs, ended with Jack Wyllie scoring his debut goal for the club, timing his run to the back post to meet Josh Brown’s cross with a low volley. Badgers held onto the lead for the rest of the first half, shading control of the midfield with Liam Ratcliffe at his most energetic and tenacious, but Epsom remained a threat and the game was a well-balanced contest.

Badgers went straight onto the attack from the second half kick-off and won a corner, but when it was wasted Eagles broke swiftly downfield and scored a good equaliser.

This early setback didn’t faze the home side and, sixteen minutes in, Winter cleverly engineered some space in midfield and played in George Coffey, whose cross was controlled and then converted by the lively Harry Ramsey for his eighth goal in six league games and a 2-1 lead for Brockham.

Just two minutes later, Mike Richardson dipped his shoulder, looked up and sent a shot high over the keeper from twenty yards out for one of the goals of the season so far. Soon after, Harvey Mewis blazed a good long-range effort just over the bar.

Despite the two-goal cushion, the rest of the match was far from relaxing as Epsom fought hard to get back into the game, Dennis Rapson having to make a couple of decent stops in the Badgers’ goal. But with Man of the Match Will Mahoney in imperious form in the home defence and pushing up frequently to initiate attacking moves, Matt Higgins playing through an injury to form a solid pairing at the back with Will Bletso, and Josh Brown a livewire up and down the left flank, Brockham held firm. They even added a fourth late on when George Coffey beat the offside trap and coolly rounded the keeper.

This was a very strong team performance and a fourth win in six league games, putting Brockham back into the top four in the table.

Squad: Dennis Rapson, Will Mahoney, Matt Higgins, Alex Nicholson, William Bletso, Ross Bangs, Josh Brown, Jack Wyllie, Liam Ratcliffe, Oli Winter, Mike Richardson, Harvey Mewis, George Coffey, Harry Ramsey.

U13B 5 - 3 Horley Town
Report by Duncan Hanwell

Epsom & Ewell League Cup R3

After a three week break, it was back to business as the U13Bs booked a slot in the last eight of the cup by beating Horley Town, leaders of Division One, in a highly entertaining match.

Horley have won all their matches this season and conceded only four goals in seven matches. But they were taken by surprise as the Badgers began to win the territorial battle in the middle of the park, with Ollie Kong again in tenacious mood.

The Badgers went forward, with Jamie Hanwell forcing a good save from the Town goalkeeper, but when Jack Heaselwood was held back outside the box, Tim Hines opened the scoring with a thunderbolt into the top corner of the net.

Town answered with an equaliser after Brockham failed to clear their lines but, four minutes later, Heaselwood latched onto a through ball from Harry Kensett to score a trademark goal and restore the lead.

With half-time approaching, Heaselwood struck again to give the Badgers a two-goal advantage going into the break.

Horley came forward and applied a lot of pressure in the second half but they could not find a way past Harry Kensett who swept up superbly at the back, showing a combination of speed, strength and skill. On the one occasion Horley broke through, Tom Wells made a brilliant reflex save in the Brockham goal.

Having weathered the storm, Brockham countered for Dan Hetzel to add the fourth goal, and Jack Heaselwood completed his hatrick minutes later, with a super flicked header after great work on the right by the tireless Kong.

Horley never gave up and were rewarded by two late goals to set the hearts fluttering a little, but the Badgers held on to secure their second cup victory against higher league opposition.

Lad of the Match: Harry Kensett for a majestic display at the back.

U11 Comets 3 - 6 Dorking Saints
Report by James Quinn (U11 Player)

Horsham & District League Cup

After Will had scored, we thought we had a chance of winning the game, by half time we were all feeling a bit breathless but we were still 1-0 up.

In the second half they had pegged the score back to 1-1 but straight after they scored we got a goal back when Andy lobbed the goalkeeper.

We had loads of chances after that but soon they scored to make it 2-2. We had to defend really hard for a while but soon cleared the ball and on the attack Harry soon had the ball and tapped it passed the goalkeeper to make it 3-2.

Then the whole game changed around and  they went on to score another three goals, the final score being 6-3 to them.

Chesworth Rovers 9 - 0 U11 Meteors
Report by Simon Haines

Horsham & District Plate R2

It's very frustrating when the boys have been working hard, getting more and more competitive each week and gaining in confidence.  Then we get a Cup match against a good team three divisions above us and get stuffed – then it happens again in the Plate!  Two steps forward one step back, but it’s the same for everyone.

The U11 Meteors actually played very well, keeping their shape and sticking to their task.  If we had taken an early chance maybe the flow of the game might have changed, we will never know.

The first half ended 3-0 and for most of the second half Brockham managed to hold it together, but in the end the holes started to appear.  Credit to the boys for competing to the end and never giving up, but Chesworth were just too good.

Man of the Match was goalkeeper Arran Hoad who played a great game, but there were four or five other boys who played really well and might have been given that award on another day.  Edward Hetzel and Rueben Jones our centre backs (I really like the partnership they are developing), Harrison Pirt (our right back who never stops battling and shows great composure on the ball) and Scott Walshe (our very own Claude Makele who makes a real nuisance of himself, as far as the opposition are concerned, running interference in front of our back four.

Well played boys. We can look forward to a return to league action next week!

Albury Griffins 4 - 3 U9B
by Paul Morris
Tadworth League

Another tight match for the Badgers. The U9 Bs demonstrated their usual attacking verve and were unlucky to lose.

Our boys got off to a flyer once again, scoring first - Theo Edwards neatly finishing a move down the left side which was orchestrated by Paddy Doyle and Jed Simister.  However, Albury countered with two quick goals before James Brown drove home the equaliser.  A final goal from Albury saw them go into half time leading 3-2, though it could have been worse but for Cameron Swayne’s customary outstanding goalkeeping.

The second half was even tighter with Jack Sherwood and Luke Morris strong in defense, Matthew Ford controlling the midfield and Will Ingram making some nice stops in goal.

An unfortunate bounce gifted Albury an easy goal, but Brockham fought back.  Theo scored his second and Brockham’s third with plenty of time left.  Unfortunately, that was the end of the scoring and Brockham left Albury with a narrow defeat.

Our star player was Paddy Doyle, who provided great creativity down the left side.

Squad: Cameron Swayne, Jack Sherwood, James Brown, Luke Morris (c), Paddy Doyle, Will Ingram, Matthew Ford, Jed Simister and Theo Edwards.
